Named one of the 20 great events of the Southeast, The Hampton Jazz Festival, is a three-day celebration of R&B, Jazz and Soul music and has become the centerpiece of thousands of family vacations, getaways and excursions. Created in 1968 to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the oldest Black colleges in the country, the festival is a unique event in that it involves the collaboration of Hampton University, the City of Hampton and Festival Productions. Originally intended as a one-time celebration on a university football field, the festival has become synonymous with the city itself, having been deeply woven into its life and history.
Past performers at the Hampton Festival included The Spinners, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Patti Labelle, Oleta Adams, Smokey Robinson, Jill Scott, Gladys Knight, Anita Baker, The Crusaders, Earth, Wind & Fire and many more.
The 2006 festival features BB King, Toni Braxton, Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Kem, Will Downing, Boney James and many others!
